Levels

Sara - Level 5 (high)
You have a potential to achieve level 6!
I really enjoyed watching your film - it kept me interested all the way though. I love the voice over, the range of different shots, and the acting too. In my opinion, you have to add a different soundtrack. Also, I didn't understand the last scenes and I had no idea what was going on. I think more clips should me added:)

Genia - Level 4
It was really fun to watch your trailer. I think the soundtrack was well put, and so were the scenes. It kept me interested, and the titles also had a good impact. I think you should add more effects to the clips and you should play with the voice overs to achieve a higher level.

Sasha - Level 4
You also can easily improve your mark! I liked the dramatic scenes, and the sound that matched it perfectly. You just have to finish it!! ;)

Melina - Level 5 (low) / Level 4 (high)
I think you used the clips smartly, and you've put everything in a very good order, so the people know what is happening. I liked the opinions in betweens the clips that made me want to watch the whole movies.

Shima's group - Level 4 (high)
I think that it is very hard to understand what is happening in the trailer. If I didn't hear the story before, I would have absolutely no idea what is it about. I think that you should add more subtitles, and add more voice overs to tell us the story! All though I thought your clips are very interesting, so is the shots.

Sheida's group - Level 5 (low)
Very interesting! I enjoyed watching this video a lot, because of your professional editing, however I wouldn't give you a full mark for level 5, as the soundtrack was, in my opinion, badly chosen. It was the same music playing through the clip, and it was getting pretty boring. You have to improve that, and add more sounds. I also had no idea what was the story about, however I loved your shots, and though it would be interesting to watch the whole movie.

Tarryn - Level 3/4
All though the shots were interesting, they were repeating themselves a lot. The whole film looked more like different scenes put together then a trailer. You would have to improve that by cutting out some of the moments! :)

Practical Work

For the practical work on today's lesson we have learned about different shots and how to show something to the audience, just the way we want to.
  • How to make someone look powerless or powerful (camera shots - lower angle etc.)
  • How to make a person look confused or angry just with camera angles.
  • How to use a point of view (from following someone)
  • How to show bad, boring, plane relationship with people.
  • How to make someone look scared.

Submarine

  • What sort of feeling and impact can music video have and what effect could a music video-style sequence achieve in film?
  • Music video that has scenes of a movie in it can be a big success for the film director. It tells about the movie in a very interesting way. One of the examples is Paramore - Decode that has put many of the Twilight scenes in their music video and it was a big success not only for the film but also for the band. It gives out all the story in a musical way.
  • What are the similarities of the Submarine trailer and the music videos?
  •  They both have a similar fading look, and look kind of old school. They also have a typical sense of humour, which could be called original.

Short Script - English

All this scenes I am planning to record several times to get lots of material for editing. Probably some of the scenes will be deleted, shorten up or changed.

Scene I – *high key lightning* , * music* Extreme long shot, showing the graveyard. Two girls walking through the allay laughing

Scena II – One of the girls pushes the other one, and in the result the torch on the grave breaks.  The other character goes off (to buy another one) where the other one stays and cleans it up. She slowly touches the name and date written on the grave studying it.

Scena III – *low key lighting*, *music and sounds in the background muted*, *cloudy* The only thing we can hear is Kamila’s breath and the see the concentration in her eyes, like she’s trying to remember something. Soon we can hear another breath, and she movs away from the grave.

Scena IV - *fog* Next to the grave we can see a ghost – her ghost, transparent (put two layers of the movie with her, and the clip of the grave on its own, put it together) in a long, Victorian dress, with her hair down with red lips. Kamila frozed. The ghost is coming towards her, reaching out for her.

 -------- fade out ---------

Scena V - *Dark, smoke, music* the tempo of the music and the pictures going through drastically  accelerates.
The main character and her friends sit in some kind of a pub (Speed Rock). We can hear laughing, talking. Still chuckling, Kamila goes off to search for her friend. When she gets in the toilet, we can see blood on the floor, leading her into the body. She screams when fade out.

Scena VI – A formal call, informing that her family died in the car accident
Scena VII – Again and again, the most important people in her life die.

Scena VIII – Forest. Low key lightning.
She’s clearly depressed, having a walk with her dog. Suddenly the dog starts to bark within a reason, and runs away. The girl gets the hint. We can hear her saying “you’re here. Show yourself” She was clearly scared. Her reflection showed up.

Scena IX - "you killed them"

Scena X – A text “you’re the most important person for me”

Scena XI – A liblary. Kamila is nervously going through the books. She found a big, old, dusty book. She starts to read it between the cabinets. The camera goes round to show the time, showing in a fast tempo the pages turning. She runs off to the computer.

Scena XII – She writes in google “old incarenations”. Highlighted words like “kills everything on its way”

Scena XIII – She runs through the tracks.

Scena XIV – She pushes a person that she cares about, she clearly got crazy, screaming “shes going to kill you, shes here”

Scena XV – She finds a note written in a black ink/blood informing here, that she will stop only if she agrees to swap lifes with her.

Short additional scenes:
-          Her laying in the snow
-          Her, standing on a viaduct
-          She trips over while running through the tracks.
-          Must have smudged make up to show that she is going crazy.

Pitch

Wiola discovers the secrets of her past life, trying to understand what happened to her old incarnation. However she has to pay the highest price for her acts, and knowledge that she regrets to have. A movie dangerously exciting, about a loss, showing how much mental strength does a 16 year old have.

PERSEPOLIS

PERSEPOLIS
cruel reality and humour
  • Comedy, Drama, Romance - we can see all of these genres in one movie. This shows us that the movie is about life. The music changes it's tempo from slow, moody and sad to a fast one, more exciting and happy, depending on a picture.
  • The trailer goes through the life of the main character - Marjane. We can see her as a little child on the beginning, and a grown adult at the end.
  • We kind of go through the problems with her - she moves to a different country for her own safety. She gets into a bad crowd, and she is embarrassed of her nationality. We can see that she has not only problems like us (boys, school, friends) and that she goes through the revolt in herself. She tries to be a normal teenager, but her real, big problems that most of us never experienced makes her unique, and she doesn't like that.
  • She misses her family and country, and it is hard for her to mingle in a crowd.

My story.

A story about a 15 year old girl, in Soviet Union in 1942.
She is one of the brightest students in school, very patriotic.
The terror in her country lasts for about 10 years now, and all the nation blindly
follows the communist, sick ambitions of Stalin. Her best friend is arrested by Cheka one day,
on her eyes, with unknown reason. That's the day when she realises what really happens.
She started to loose faith in her country, and her beliefs became a lie.
Her grades went down. Few days later she stood up to her history teacher, which
got her arrested and send to the special school in Stalingrad.
After a few months, she overhears her teachers listening to the radio, which said
that the Wehrmacht is coming.
Everyone in school seems to be excited, and she can hear people talking on the cordial
about smashing german army. However Maja knows how incredible and ruthless the german army is.
When the evacuation of the teachers happens, most of the students are left behind,
as there was "no place".
Few days later on the 14th of July, the Battle of Stalingrad happens.
Hiding in her room, she can hears the shots and screams of students from her school.
Everyone had to die - the germans had no mercy. Finally they opened the door,
and she heard the footsteps of a soldier. He saw her, he was alone. They were staring at each other
for few seconds, when someone called something in german, which meant "anyone there?", the soldier, holding the gun in his hands said "nein" informing that they should move forward, but he'll look again through the room. He try to tell her that she has to get away from the city.
He decided to help her, giving her the german uniform. He introduces her to the soldiers as a german student. After some time, He explains her that she reminds him of his sister, which died in germany on the crystal night few years ago. He told her his secret, that he was a german Jew, who by luck got into the Hitler's School in Berlin. In time they both fall in love.

After their feelings developed fully, the boy dieds in the battle. The girl, who was introduced as a boy, gets send by the soldiers "back" to germany, to the HitlerJudgen school, where she becomes with a plan to kill the furher. She builds up a bomb in secret, and she becomes a Russian spy, not for her country to gain honour, but to end the war. Hitler visits the school, and during the dinner she brought a bomb in her bag, and she tried to sit next to furher as close as she could. The bomb exploded, killing her and other men, however Hitler lived, he came out of the explosion with a broken arm. The war continued.

Heros.

GLADIATOR
His armour and weapons make him look like a general. From the scenes that we saw,
we can tell that he is very powerful, strong, and he is a good leader. Standing up to
people more important then him shows that he is unbreakable and has no fear.

choose a hero ; s p i d e r m a n .
The hero needs to be intelligent and quick thinker in order to solve problems.

We can see that Peter Parker is a very intelligent and quick thinking person in many scenes in the movie. He is usually all alone with his problems, while fighting characters stronger and bigger then him. There isn't a lot of time to think, however everything seems to getting to him fast - while we are sitting in front of the television, wondering what on Earth is happening, missing heart beats he fights for his live, using anything he can find, racing his possibilities.
One of the examples, is the scene in the first movie, when the enemy imprisoned about 25 little children crying and screaming for help, which were hanging above the precipice, on the same time, on the other side it was Peter's love who was hanging. He had about few seconds to decide who to rescue. The enemy let go of the lines in one moment. Most of us, probably all, would have no idea what to do - me for example, would stand in place with open mouth not being able to move my body at all.
In these two seconds, he jumped to rescue his girlfriend, quickly turning around, catching the line of the couch with little children.

007 Casino Royale & Action Adventure

0 0 7  C A S I N O  R O Y A L E .
  •  Men – fighting, weapons, attractive women, money.
  •  Women – attractive men, romance.
  •   Teens – idols.
  •   Adults – romance, action.
  •   British Viewers – James Bond, women has a British accent.
  •   American Viewers - expensive cars, filmed in their country.
I think that the producers tried to make it appeal to most of the people, however it is most likely for British, teenage boys to watch this movie as some of the age/sex groups were more successful then the others as the audience. The least interested would be American women, as there isn't anything interesting for these who don't really like fights or action.
The statistics show that the movie was more a success in Britain, then America, which is supported by the reason that James Bond is a classic of British cinema.

Which of the posters fit the most to the Action & Adventure genre?
The first one - The Pirates of the Caribbean, because the ship tells us they are travelling,
and they have adventures. Jack Sparrow is also holding two machetes, which mean there is a lot of action - fighting etc. The title "Pirates of.." is also successful for this genre because we know that the pirates were travelling around the World, fighting. That's what Pirates do.

The Gladiator one isn't as successful, because it's very blank and we wouldn't know what is the movie about, if we didn't seen it first. There is a man, standing, with an orange sky behind him. It doesn't really tells us about neither Adventure or Action.

The Avatar show us on the poster another World, different creatures and things we never saw before. It fantasy and adventure, however it's hard to see any action in it.

why are the action & adventure films are so popular with the audiences ?
- violences.
- guns, fighting.
- usually some romance.
- travelling.
- filmed in lots of different places.
All of it together gets out attention.

Why does some people criticise the Action & Adventure films?
- there is always lots of people killed.
- violent or cruel
- low quality scripts.
- they are simple.

have to think of
- title
- movie that inspired you
- plot
- age certificate
- characters

Action & Adventure.

Explain the main features of action/adventure films and provide examples to support your ideas. Refer to at least two action/adventure films:

  •       Indiana Jones – raiders of the lost ark
  •    Salt

Representation, Audience, Media language, Institution, Storyline, Structure, Oppositional characters, Journey/Quest, Action sequences.

INDIANA JONES
RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK

The director of the Indiana Jones decided to focus his movie on the Second World War times, in 1940’s.
The movie was filmed all around the globe, as we travelled along with the main character.
Indiana Jones has to find the Lost Ark before the Nazi’s do, because Adolf Hitler believed that it would make his army impossible to defeat.
There is a wide audience for this movie, because it goes along with most of the age groups. Older people could get interested because of the old times, and younger because there is a good sense of humor. People who are into the historian themes or who are interested in history itself would also enjoy this movie. There is some romance. The opposition characters in this movie are the nazi’s.
His mission ends with a success, defeating the german soldiers. Which could lead to the end of the Second World War in some way. There is a lot of the action like shooting or chasing. It keeps the emotions in the air, because the character always hardly gets away from the death’s arms and we are not sure what will happen next. We are getting to know the character through the movie and we feel like we get through those hard moments with him, so we would hate seeing him dying because we got to like him. When it is dangerous and his life is in risk it takes our breath away for a moment.

November 15th 2010 Success

For the advert to be a success the company must come up with a range of new advertising ideas. The advert must be new and original so that it does not bore the viewers or make them want to change the TV channel. It must hold their interest and make the viewer associate the originality of the advert with the product. For example, if a product is advertised in an old-fashioned and boring way then the viewers will see the product in the same light, boring and old-fashioned. However, if a product is advertised in a new and inspirational way then the viewers will like the product as something good and are more likely to buy it.
The advert must get into people, and the producers have to think about the target audience, because different age groups are intrested in different things.

November the 3rd 2010

They are very different from each other, even though they are on the same topic.

The audiences for magazine one are teenagers, I think for both sexes, but mainly for boys who are more interested in sports.
It’s very colorful, pictures are put all over the place, and it’s like a teenage mess.
You can see the price clearly, and is lots of words like “POSTERS” or “SUPER”
Which catches our attention.

The magazine two is very different. The picture on is a close-shot, the face of one of the most famous goalkeepers on the World. The audience for it, are men over 25.
There is no a lot of stuff on the cover, like in magazine one.
The logo of the magazine is covering the Player’s forehead; maybe they are trying to say that they are as good as him? The word “Extra” is in bold and it stands out.
The goalkeeper looks away with a confident smile which tells us he is not afraid of anything.

Wednesday, 29 September 2010

augustcoverskysportsmag_2337699.jpg
Audience: people who like football, sky sports channel, especially men.

Steve Gerard is covering up the logo of the magazine, which means the football players
are more important then the logo.  Big heading - THE CHASE IS ON, with "Can anyone catch MU?".
It basically means, that four of the biggest football clubs in England are racing for the Cup.
We can see that the Manchester United is on the first place.

The picture on the cover is joined with the text, because it's looking, like the players are chasing somebody/something.
The price is small and you can't see it, that means that the magazine is not cheap and they want the costumers to buy the magazine because its good, not cheap.

Typography - Capital Letters, it's like shouting.
